u-blox UBX-R5 becomes first GCF certified IoT chipset

The u-blox UBX-R5 LTE-M/NB-IoT chipset first realizes a high degree of integration of end-to-end security mechanisms and wireless technologies, fully meeting the needs of mission-critical or long-life-cycle IoT applications.

Thalwil, Switzerland, March 26, 2020 – u-blox (SIX: UBXN), a leading provider of positioning and wireless communication technologies, announced that u-blox’s proprietary multi-band LTE -M/NB-IoT chipset UBX-R5 has successfully passed the Global Certification Forum (GCF) certification IoT Chipsets certified by the IoT Chipset Program. The GCF program, launched in January this year, certifies IoT chipsets covering both NB-IoT and LTE-M, enabling the entire IoT ecosystem to easily integrate and embed certified chipsets into modules and devices.

Lars Nielsen, CEO of the Global Certification Forum, said: “GCF’s IoT chipset certification program launched earlier this year, and we are very pleased that u-blox’s UBX-R5 Cat-M1 chipset has won the first place in such a short period of time. We expect more IoT chipsets to be certified this year, and certified IoT chipsets will meet industry-recognized 3GPP standards, thereby increasing confidence and reliability in the IoT industry.”

Andreas Thiel, Head of Product Center at u-blox, said: “We are very pleased that the GCF has given high recognition to the quality of the UBX-R5 LTE-M/NB-IoT IoT chipset, which not only sets the stage for IoT connectivity The new benchmark lays the foundation for secure chip-to-cloud communications.”

The u-blox UBX-R5 is a 5G-enabled cellular chipset for low-power wide-area (LPWA) mission-critical or long-lifecycle IoT applications including smart metering, connected vehicles, tracking management, security systems , building automation, smart lighting solutions and connected healthcare. Mobile network operators are announcing the rollout of 5G networks, so 5G compatibility has become a key factor in choosing a cellular communication module. LTE-M and NB-IoT are backward compatible with 5G networks, and by implementing key LTE-M and NB-IoT features in 3GPP Release 14, the UBX-R5 enables software upgrades to deployed devices, allowing users to transition more smoothly to the 5G era.

Additionally, with a hardware-based Root of Trust (RoT) integrated in a discrete secure element (compliant with EAL5+ High Common Criteria certification requirements), the UBX-R5 provides unmatched built-in end-to-end security mechanisms, making it ideal for protecting sensitive assets and communication.

About GCF

The Global Certification Forum (GCF) was established in 1999 and currently has more than 335 members. GCF collaborates with major global organizations and independent standardization committees to define certification requirements for the mobile and IoT industries. Members from the major operators, device and IoT manufacturers, and inspection industry members and their partners work together to enable device-network interoperability, reduce inspection costs, and shorten time to market. Over the years, the GCF certification ecosystem has kept pace with the times, not only predicting global market trends, but also launching a range of certification programs including 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, IoT, oneM2M, modules, collaborative IoT chipsets, C – V2X, eSIM (RSP), Industry 4.0 and MCPTT services.
